Day 18: Riverton to Worland WY

First day of the trip where I didn't start out with a jacket!  Temperatures started in the 60’s and warmed up to 90 by the afternoon.

Terri and I made good time on our first 20 miles which brought us to the first water stop at the Boysen Reservoir.  From there we traveled to the town of Shoshoni where we picked up the Wind River Scenic Byway. We wound our way through the Wind River Indian Reservation until we reached the second water stop at the Boysen State Park. It was there we started our decent into the Wind Ricer Canyon.

The Wind River Canyon is 17 miles long, up to 3,000 feet wide and 2,500 feet deep.  We got to enjoy the “deep” part on a 12 mile decent, which took us through 3 tunnels and amazing views of the colorful canyon rock walls and the wind river.  This was definitely the highlight of the day!

After, lunch we made out way through Thermopolis which is know for it’s hot springs.  It was another 30 miles to our destination in Worland.  Thanks to some downhills and favorable winds we made into town by 1:30 and treated ourselves to some ice cream before setting up camp.

Stats: 92 miles and 2,462 feet of elevation gain.

  1. I'll have to find that wind river scenic byway - looks like it'd be fun on a motorcycle too. GO GO Spinner Wife!
