Today was the biggest day of the C2C tour from a climbing, mileage and hopefully time in the saddle perspective. We got an early start to our day leaving at 6:35 am. The big goal of the day was to climb the Big Horn Mountains via Powder River Pass (Elevation 9,666 feet).
The route took us into Ten Sleep (28 miles) where the climbing began. It was a 25 mile climb to the summit mostly 4-7% grades with some switchbacks thrown in. The scenery going up the pass was amazing and I tried to savor every view knowing that this was the last Mountain Pass we would be seeing on this trip.
Terri is the queen of the mountain climbing! She pulled into lunch a good 15 minutes before me! Lunch was about 17 miles into the climb so when we still had another 8 miles of climbing to do after lunch. We were elated when we reached the summit and were then joined by Adrian, LeeAnn, Kim and Scotty.
After the summit we knew we had another 2 mile climb after a 10 mile descent but what we didn’t know is there were an additional 5 shorter climbs that had 7% grades. So, we would climb/descend for another 20 miles. As if we hadn’t climbed enough for one day!! All total we climbed 8,611 feet and rode 93 miles. We arrived in Buffalo after a long 10 hour day!
The day was fabulous! Beautiful weather, scenery, we conquered the mountain and now have some bragging rights! Terri and I even stopped at the Occidental Hotel for a beer to celebrate before heading to overnight camp site.
