Day 27 Interior to Philip South Dakota

We started out day with a short ride entering the Badlands National Park and eating breakfast at the Cedar Pass Lodge.  Then we rode the Badlands loop road for about 25 miles. I have been through the Badlands many years ago and don’t remember it being so hilly!  We actually had 4 short passes: Norbeck, Bigfoot, Dillon and Pinnacles.  The views were stunning and we stopped often for pictures.

After we left the park we made our way to Wall where we had our lunch stop and then visited Wall Drug.  We left Wall, and made our way to Highway 14. By the time we picked up 14 it was really hot and it was really the first day where we faced a strong headwind for a long time (30 miles to be exact).  After about 10 miles into the afternoon ride Terri and I were already running low on fumes. We were so fortunate that about this time Kevin came along and helped us get to the end of the ride!

We stopped at a local store in Philip and treated ourselves to some Ice Cream and Pizza then rode to the Philip School our overnight location. Tonight we are camping in the gym to stay cool in the AC.  Dinner was fabulous tonight all home cooked amd some of the best corn salad I have ever eaten!

After dinner we had an awards ceremony.  We do that every Friday night to close out our week.  Tonight Terri awarded Kevin with the Hero award for pulling us in.  Steve awarded me the “Beast” award because I rode single speed for a while earlier this week!  It was such an a thoughtful gesture!

Stats for today:  64.5 miles and 2,077 feet of elevation gain (1,500 of that was done in the Badlands)

Beautiful blue skies and bikers in the Badlands
